Description: |
Ed Sieg and Sons' dairy herd and farm near Ramsey, Indiana, ca. 1949. At the time of the photograph, the farm was managed by Eugene Seig, age 16, with the help of his brothers Wilford and Donald, all of whom were long-time 4-H members. Their Jersey herd was composed of twenty-two females, ten of which were producing cows. The Seigs produced ungraded milk for the local cheese factory for several years before switching to graded milk in 1948. The change required a significant investment in equipment and construction of a milking parlor and milkhouse in order to meet Board of Health requirements. However, the Seigs anticipated recouping their finances within a year due to the increasing prices of graded milk over the ungraded product. Photographer Albert Wallace produced an oil tinted version of this photograph that was hung in the Old Capitol Bank and Trust Company in downtown Corydon, Indiana. |
