Description: |
Original handwritten election documents of Harrison County, Indiana from 1835. The documents are organized by the county’s existing seven townships of the period – Blue River, Boone, Franklin, Harrison, Heth, Morgan, and Posey. The documents reflect elections that took place in each township in April and August of 1835. Local township officials, such as constables, road supervisors, overseers of the poor, etc., were elected in April. In August, residents voted for a member of Congress and two representatives to the state legislature. Elections for local justices of the peace and other township officials also took place in Blue River, Boone, Franklin, Heth, and Posey Townships at various times during the year. For each election, each township typically provides: 1) a list of the names of people who voted in the election; 2) a tally that lists each candidate with accompanying tally marks that note the number of votes the candidate received; and 3) a return statement signed by local election officials that reiterates and confirms the total votes each candidate received. These three records often appear in separate documents, but could be combined on a single paper. An additional 1835 document contains a table showing total votes from each township for each candidate in the August election. |
