Helen Porter Griffin and grandson, Frederick Porter Griffin, ca. 1915

Description: Helen Porter Griffin (1844-1940) holds her young grandson, Frederick Porter Griffin, who was born in April 1915. Helen was the daughter of Judge William A. and Elizabeth McClelland Porter of Corydon, Indiana. With the exception of the time she spent pursuing an education at an Indianapolis seminary as a young woman and the first year of her marriage, Helen resided her entire life in her childhood home, the Porter-Griffin House, which is now a state owned historic site. Helen married Corydon merchant Patrick Griffin and together they raised seven children in the Porter-Griffin home. The Griffins operated a dry goods store in Corydon for many years. Patrick Griffin died in 1917. Helen Porter Griffin died at age 96 in 1940. Their children, and then grandchildren continued to run the family business. Frederick Porter Griffin, pictured here on his grandmothers lap, was the last proprietor of Griffins store in Corydon, which closed permanently in 1983.
