Description: |
This image of the school building that once stood in Leavenworth, Indiana was captured in the winter of 1963. Built in 1873, the school served the river community for 64 years until the infamous 1937 flood destroyed much of the small town. The two-story, brick building remained partially dry during the flood and served as a temporary refuge for several people. Following the disaster, the majority of Leavenworth residents chose to rebuild their town on a higher bank nearby, and old Leavenworth down by the river was abandoned. No longer in use, the school building stood empty, gradually deteriorating, and is no longer extant. |
