Description: |
This book contains the meeting minutes of the Womans Literary Club of Corydon from January 1898 through May 1899. It is the earliest minute book of the club known to still exist. Club members during this time included: Mrs. George W. (Annie) Applegate, Mrs. Jesse W. Riddle, Mrs. Hezekiah Allen, Mrs. James L. Morris, Mrs. John Loweth, Miss Lizzie Brewster, Mrs. L. A. Rieley, Miss Charlotte Luckett, Mrs. Peter Bulleitt, Mrs. E. G. Keller, Miss Ruth Denbo, Mrs. W. B. Slemons, Miss Lida Marshall, and Mrs. C. W. Cook. During this particular season, the club focused on the plays of William Shakespeare. The minutes reflect the members opinions and interpretations of the works being studied as they thoroughly dissected the themes, settings, plot and characters of each play. Also, the women often set aside a portion of their time to discuss current events. Topics ranged from national and international politics and relations, to arts and culture, world leaders and events, and scientific discoveries. The Spanish-American War, the sinking of the Maine, U.S. - Philippines relations, the possibility of a Nicaraguan Canal, Rookwood Pottery, Haleys Comet, Edison and Tesla and the development of electricity, the Samoan Islands, and the marital troubles of Buffalo Bill Cody are but a few of the topics touched upon. In addition to the meeting minutes, this book contains the clubs bylaws, lists of officers, and attendance records of members. Also, at the end of the book are two attached newspaper clippings. One is the obituary of club founder and 1898-1899 president, Annie Vanzandt Applegate, who died in August 1899. The other is a 1909 article covering a tea that the club held to benefit the establishment of a local public library. The tea was held at the home of one of the members, and the price of admission was the donation of a book for the library. The event was a success with the donation of 119 books. The newspaper article lists all who donated as well as the titles of the volumes. |
