Original caption: In Victory Lane, A. J. Foyt and his wife, Lucy, left, and Festival Queen, pretty Diane Hunt, with the Borg-Warner trophy after Foyt won the 1961 500 Mile race in Indianapolis. The 26 year old Texan, never out of contention but seemingly out of first-place money with less than 10 miles to go, grabbed the lead on the 198th lap when Eddie Sachs made a fourth and unexpected pit stop for fuel and tires. That was more than enough to give the dapper Houston native the final lead and he crossed the finish line 8.5 seconds ahead of Sachs. Diane Hunt, a captivating junior at Indiana University, was singled out for one of the most exciting honors in the sports world - that of presenting the Borg-Warner trophy to the winning driver. The charming blonde co-ed qualified for the glamorous role by winning a state-wide beauty-personality contest over 32 other contestants. In awarding the handsome cup in Victory Lane, she inherited a part which for many years has been played by Hollywood actresses. Image and original caption appear in Gear-O-Gram Magazine, Vol. 19, No. 03, 1961-10-09. This archival material has been provided for educational purposes.
