Description: |
Commissioned by L. Strauss & Co. for their centennial celebration, this model shows Ed Pierres vision of the heart of Indianapolis twenty-five years in the future. Pierres plan includes four large parking structures, one in each quadrant of the city, terminating the diagonal avenues. Most historic buildings would remain. Gaps in the city fabric would be filled with modern mid-rise buildings that maintain the traditional sidewalk frontage. There would be no parking lots, no skyscrapers, and no large setbacks! A heliport would provide an alternative to the automobile..Pierre also proposed a government center (not shown in the model) extending westward from the State House to White River. This idea was fulfilled, decades later, in the design of the new state office building complex. See also Cross Roads Plan. This archival material has been provided for educational purposes.
