Description:	George Edward Kessler replaced iron bridges with masonry spans as part of his “City Beautiful” ideas in his parks and boulevard system plan. He designed two major bridges to complete the Fall Creek corridor, the Capitol Avenue Bridge and the Meridian Street Bridge. Kessler preferred to use the Melan arch, but covered the concrete structures in Indiana limestone. The Capitol Avenue Bridge is restrained, with paneled spandrels and piers and a simple oval cutout stone railing. A concrete arch bridge had been built on the site in 1901, but the 1913 flood heavily damaged the bridge. The new Kessler bridge was built in 1915. Kessler planned an especially decorative treatment for the Meridian Street Bridge with channeled ashlar stone, cartouches, and swags ornament the piers. The railing is a Classical balustrade.
