Description: |
Originally the site of the White City Amusement Park, Broad Ripple Park borders the White River at 1550 Broad Ripple Avenue. The amusement park included such attractions as the Broad Ripple Park Carousel, also known as the White City Carousel, and a steam locomotive. Tryouts for the Olympic team for swimming also took place here in 1924 and 1952. The original amusement park opened in 1906 but extensive fire damage in 1908 caused the closure of the park until the Union Traction Company bought and reopened the park. In 1922, the park was bought by the Broad Ripple Amusement Park Association and renamed Broad Ripple Park. The land went through a succession of ownership after this period until the Board of Parks Commission of Indianapolis bought the park in 1945. They removed all the attractions of the amusement park, including the Carousel and steam locomotive, which were relocated to the Indianapolis Childrens Museum and the Transportation Museum in Noblesville respectively. 62nd Street; Evanston Avenue This archival material has been provided for educational purposes.
