Description: |
Donated by John and Evaline Holliday during the 1916 Indiana Centennial celebration, Holliday Park remains one of the oldest parks in Indianapolis and encompasses 94 acres. However, possession of the park didnt occur until 1932. Initially, the park functioned as a botanical garden and arboretum with work being completed by the WPA, and the house was used as a botanic library and museum of natural history. In the 1950s, the park slowly ceased to be maintained as a botanical garden, and a new art installation project, The Ruins, took precedent. Designed by Elmer Taflinger, the Ruins began in 1958 when Indianapolis was awarded the ‘Races of Man statuary by Karl Bitter from the Western Electric Company in New York City. The project, spanning two decades, eventually included pieces from other demolished Indianapolis buildings and the Constitutional Mall which transformed the Ruins into a symbolic panorama of American history. In 1982, the park was remodeled and landscaped by the Parks Department. In 1990, Friends of Holliday Park formed to help maintain the park and develop a playground. Even today, the Friends of Holliday Park continued to revitalize and improve the parks facilities for its patrons. 6363 Spring Mill Road This archival material has been provided for educational purposes.
