1920s sailor shirt

Description: Lavender linen sailor shirt with long sleeves and sailor collar. The cuffs and collar are trimmed with stripes of narrow white braid. There are also multiple white patches appliqued to the shirt including: a patch monogramed with an E on the left sleeve, a patch embroidered with chevrons and an eagle on the right sleeve, and a patch with an embroidered rope knot at the center front of the neckline.
This style of shirt is called a Middy Blouse and it was adapted from the uniform shirts worn by sailors and naval midshipmen. These blouses were common in the late 1910s and 1920s as part of young womens school uniforms and sportswear. The patches on this shirt were mass produced and match those found on many similar extant garments from the time period.
