Original leaves from famous Bibles, leaf 005: Twelfth century manuscript Bible, ca. 1150 A. D.

Bible. Latin. Manuscript. 1150

Description: Original caption: This century surpassed all others for the beautiful writing found in its MSS. The Carolingian bookhand here represented, is wellnigh perfect. One scribe of the period groans, Scriber, qui nescit, nullum putat esse laborem. (Whoso knows not how to write, thinks it is no trouble.) It has been noted, however, that the more beautiful a manuscript becomes in its characters, the less accurate is its Latinity. Some writings of the Benedictines during this century, are almost unintelligible because of their barbarous Latin.
Double columns with decorative blue and red initial letters and in the heading at top margin.; Provenance: Original leaves collected and assembled in portfolios by Otto F. Ege of Cleveland, Ohio.; Portfolios were sold and disbributed by New York bookseller Philip C. Duschnes, ca. 1948.
