Description: Original caption: This Hebrew Bible was compiled and printed in seventeen 16 mo. volumes by the greatest scholar-printer of all times, Robert Stephanus; it was based on the text of Jacob Chayim of Tunis. Francis I appointed Robert Stephanus kings printer for Latin, Greek, and Hebrew in recognition of the accuracy and beauty of his texts. The fine Hebrew characters used in the publication have been attributed to the distinguished Venetian letter-founder, Guillaume le B and supposedly were paid for by the king.
Leaf mounted at left edge in window mat 47 x 34 cm. with printed descriptive card hinged at lower left corner of mat.; Provenance: Original leaves collected and assembled in portfolios by Otto F. Ege of Cleveland, Ohio.; Portfolios were sold and disbributed by New York bookseller Philip C. Duschnes, ca. 1948.
