Letter from The Secretary of the Navy

Description: Letter from The Secretary of the Navy - Washington presenting Wendell Trent the Bronze Star Medal. The letter states: The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to WENDELL TRENT, PHARMACISTS MATE THIRD CLASS UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For heroic service as a Stretcher Bearer attached to Casualty Collecting Section of a Marine Infantry Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, February 21, 1945. Informed of four seriously wounded marines lying forward of the front lines and of the wounding of three men who had attempted their rescue, machine-gun and rifle fire to a position near the casualties. Although the intensity of the enemy fire prevented the removal of the wounded men, he moved from one position to another to administer first aid for two hours before evacuation could be effected across the fire-swept terrain. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. TRENT is authorized to wear the Combat V For the President, James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy.
