The Circle as seen from Illinois Street, Indianapolis IN: The Circle viewed from the west also presented an inspiring scene. At the left is Christ Episcopal Church; in the left foreground, Second Presbyterian Church; in the distance to the left of the Governors Mansion, First Presbyterian Church; on the far right, Wesley Chapel; and to its left in the distance, the dome of the first courthouse. In later years, Second Presbyterian Church became Indianapolis High School. Another church--Plymouth Congregational Church--stood immediately north of the Circle on the west side of Meridian Street. The Governors Mansion had doors on each side, long halls dividing the floors into four separate rooms. The building, ill-adapted for a dwelling, was utilized as a meeting place for many organizations. Drawing by Christian Schrader.
