Fred W. Meyer portrait, Woodburn, Indiana. Born May 22, 1895. Died October 3, 1971, Milan Center, New Haven. Married Adina Schaper. Children: Harold, b. 1924; Frederick, b. 1926; Ruth, b. 1933. Buried Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Woodburn. Completed grade school at St. Peters Lutheran school. Learned carpentry and cabinetry from Wm Goeglen, Thurmon, Indiana. Established contracting business with Bill Bear in the early 1920s, and later incorporated with his brother John and Charlie Smith as Meyer Builders. He was on the building committee and was a founder of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Anthony Boulevard. He moved to Woodburn in 1937. Established the Meyer Addition in June 1946. He was elected mayor of Woodburn in 1946 and served one term. Was active in Democratic politics in Allen County and served as precinct committeeman for many years. He was the first Democrat to be elected a county commissioner in Allen County. He was elected in 1964 and served from 1965 to 1969. He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, serving on the Building Committee and in various church offices, including Financial Secretary of both church and school. |
