Castel St. Angelo

Castel St. Angelo built from 135 to 138 by Emperor Adrian to be used for him and his successors as their burial places. At the top is the statue of St. Michael. It was given its present name in 590 after Pope Gregory The Great saw an angel standing on the castle, announcing the end of the plague which was infesting the city. Facing the Castel is the Ponte St. Angelo, the bridge over the Tiber River, built in 136 by Adrian. The statues of the Angels are by the pupils of Bernini in 1688. Rome, Italy. Date 08/14/1952. |
