First Loos Grocery Store: 2135 South Lafayette at DeWald. Originally built for August Loos by his father Henry Charles Loos about 1884. After August death in 1877 John Loos with his father H. C. Loos operated the store. In 1900 Ulric Joseph Loos son of H. C. Loos and Anna M. Loos took over the operation until his retirement due to ill health in 1931 at the age of 56. The “new” store with apartments for the U. J. Loos family was built in 1910-1911 by moving the old store to the back of the lot. That building became Steckbeck’s Saloon one of the oldest in the city. The entire complex including the old Loos Homestead at 2133 South Lafayette St. (Built 1872) was destroyed by fire in mid 1970’s (May 25, 1977). Ulric J. Loos Born 1876, Death 1940.
